Back packs; giving them a good clear out now and again……

How large is your back pack???

A good friend of mine has a great way of looking at things and he first used his ‘back pack’ analogy about a year ago. We both ventured out into the ‘dating game’ after many years of being married and were supporting each other as we decided that a number of first dates were never to be repeated. We swapped notes and he suggested that everyone has a back pack. Some people’s back packs were rather large and cumbersome and both he and I seemed to attract these folk with alarming regularity; I put this down to his ability to rescue (well he is a fireman) and my nuturing light that shines even when I think it’s dimmed. We’ve both got a handle on our respective situations now and have learnt a lot along the way.

I listened to another friend last night as she talked to my daughter about the need to take out the contents of your back pack at different stages of your life and have a look at them; only putting back in what was important, good or useful to you. That will work if you know which direction you are heading in; some folk are stuck in dealing with things and the clarity needed for a back pack evaluation is hard to find.

Who do you know who will let you talk out loud? Without comment (vital this bit) so you can hear yourself speaking and it stops things going round and round in your head. It is easier to see where you want to go if you can see where you’ve been and why.

I have just had a major clear out with my back pack and it’s true that nature abhors a vacuum because I’m having a bit of a battle stopping all sorts of things crowd it right back up again. I need a bit of time to step back and evaluate what I want in it. It’s great having no plan, but I need the space to decide what is now relevant and good from all the opportunities coming my way.

I have other thoughts on back pack clearing but they will keep for another day.
