But communication is two-sided – vital and profound communication makes demands also on those who are to receive it… demands in the sense of concentration, of genuine effort to receive what is being communicated – Roger Sessions

We are moving so fast through our days and the communication tools at our disposal are adding to the speed at which we ‘talk’ to each other.

I see ‘Likes’ on Facebook and I think if the people pressing the button so quickly knew what was actually going on behind the scenes of particular situations they would not have pressed that button.

Texts drop in on our phones and we dash off replies.

Emails crowd out our Inbox and we rattle through those at speed too.

All these words flying about and we think we are communicating properly and our meaning is clear, but is it? The script running in our heads and our own perspective prompt our words but how are they being received at the other end?

If someone matters to you, if a situation needs care then take the time to find the right words and check the meaning these convey because it matters to the person who receives it.

Face to face is even better as a smile, a hand held out with love or a hug mean more than words.

Your last line is what makes the most impact for connection. I hope we never lose it.
